2012 honda pilot review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Fresh styling inside and out. introductionthe honda pilot is a sturdy, reliable suv with ample space, convenient features and the ability to handle whatever weather mother nature might have in store.  new for the 2012 honda pilot is a refreshed exterior including an updated front fascia, grille and headlights. Inside, the 2012 pilot gets a redesigned center stack and instrument cluster, updated navigation system and better interior materials. Added sound proofing makes for better noise insulation, and several features that were previously options now come standard on the 2012 pilot.  also notable is a slight improvement in fuel economy for the 2012 honda pilot. When hauling cargo, the pilot has enough space to carry a 4x8-foot sheet of building material flat inside.  pilot is available with either front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. Those who prefer a sportier, more responsive crossover should consider the mazda cx-9. Other alternatives include the ford explorer and dodge durango. Each is offered with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive (4wd). Every trim level comes with the same powertrain: a 3. 5-liter, 24-valve, single overhead cam v6 engine that makes 250 horsepower and 253 pound-feet of torque, paired to a 5-speed automatic transmission. Although the updated fascia, grille and headlights give the 2012 pilot a more contemporary look, it's clear that this boxy crossover was strictly meant to be functional. Base lx models get black plastic side body moldings and door handles, while ex models and above get these in body color. Foglights and roof rails on upper trim levels add more functionality as well as a sportier look.  panel crimps around the wheel openings aid the rugged look without adding width or bolt-on parts that might promote rust. The rear wiper parks off the hatch glass, allowing it to open separately. The top tow rating is a respectable 4500 pounds on 4wd and a modest 2000 pounds on front-drive models. interiorbetter-looking textures and materials flank the inside of the 2012 honda pilot compared to its predecessor. The revised instrument cluster is attractive and easy to read, with a clear background and silver-toned rings. Although the new center stack is less busy than the previous model, it still contains a mind-numbing 45 buttons, including those for climate control, audio, 4wd and navigation. The large, idrive-like button for the navigation and entertainment system is placed near the bottom, which takes some getting used to. Still, it's more user-friendly than the last version.  storage abounds in the 2012 honda pilot. A large, deep center console holds plenty of gear, but its cavernous dimensions can gobble up small items and make them tough to find. Front seats offer good support and the built-in heaters get toasty quickly. Passengers get big cupholders back here, too, as well as storage pockets in the doors. The seat cushions for the second and third rows are too low for tall passengers, however, forcing those with longer legs into a squatting, knees-up position. With the second- and third-row seats stowed, storage space maxes out at a respectable 87 cubic feet. Large and bulky items fit with relative ease thanks to the pilot's boxy shape. The cargo area has as assortment of tie-down points and bag hooks, and the cargo floor, equipped with a net, can be flipped up and latched against the third-row seatback to create a basket/shelf capable of holding 22 pounds. There is also more storage below the cargo floor.  the cloth upholstery on lx and ex we found to be comfortable in temperature extremes. The cloth is a subdued design with just enough pattern to hide stains that become part and parcel of any eight-seat vehicle. Just like the priciest pilot, door armrests have soft cushioned elbow pads and there's no cheap feel in frequently felt surfaces. driving impressionthe honda pilot's practical image falls short when it comes to performance. There's not much oomph off the line, which we assume is in part to aid fuel economy numbers. It's cumbersome around corners and in tight spaces, especially noticeable in l. A.'s crowded parking lots. Ride quality is compliant and comfortable, and the pilot floats over bumps and chewed-up city roads with ease. Pilot's suspension is tuned softer than that of the gmc acadia and buick enclave yet it leans less in corners than the toyota highlander. For the most part the engine is in the background, never silenced, never rough and never annoying. The toyota highlander and mazda cx-9 perform better in these respects.  braking performance felt adequate to us, although some industry tests indicate the 2012 honda pilot requires much more stopping distance than others in its class. 2008 honda cr-v review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. High-dollar crossover style in a compact-price suv. introductiononce funky and cute, the honda cr-v has grown up to look more like a high-dollar crossover. This latest-generation cr-v, completely redesigned and re-engineered for the 2007 model year, is more powerful and more comfortable than the previous-generation models. Its new suspension geometry delivers an improved ride and better, more responsive handling. There's marginally more cargo room. Everything by way of instruments, controls and storage is, respectively, logically arrayed, properly placed, and reasonably plentiful. The ex-l now comes with dual-zone automatic climate control, an eight-way power driver's seat, and the same premium audio system that last year came only with the navigation system.  real time all-wheel drive is offered on all three models. The 2008 fuel economy figures from the u. New for 2008 are dual-zone automatic climate control; eight-way power-adjustable driver's seat with power lumbar support; and the same 270-watt, seven-speaker (including subwoofer) premium stereo that used to come only with the navigation system.  the ex-l can also be equipped with voice-recognition gps-based navigation, and a rearview camera. It is then priced as a separate model 27,200). Large, sharply angled headlight housings crowd the upper grille and bleed down into the lower air intake. Stout fender flares stretch out to wrap tightly around the tires, giving the new cr-v a sturdy, planted stance.  the side aspect shows most clearly the latest cr-v's departure from the boxy, mini-suv look. Starting from the gently rounded hood, the relatively fast windshield flows into a roofline that drops ever so slightly as it passes over the sharply tapered glasshouse, ending at the tailgate's top edge, which itself is pulled forward to a point almost directly above the rear wheel well. A strong character line runs from the top of the front wheel well back beneath the full-round door handles to bifurcate the side marker lens of the rear taillight. To us, it looks a little like the mercedes-benz r-class in the overall outline.  the rear view presents more of the classic suv look, with a trapezoidal backlight bookended by the trademark cr-v high taillights and atop a fairly tall and relatively broad, high-relief tailgate panel. The oversize license plate recess will accommodate almost any country's registration telltale. A repeat of the front end's skid plate look masks the rear bumper's mass and draws the eye to tires pushed out to the edges of the cr-v's side panels. interiorthe interior of the honda cr-v focuses on function with a bit of style tossed in to make things interesting. Everything is in its place for the most part, and everything feels the way it should. Quality of materials and fit and finish overall live up to honda's standards; some trim pieces, however, showed traces of flash, those little flat bits of plastic left over from the seams of the original molds.  the grippy, waffle-textured, fabric upholstery feels durable. The ex-l's optional leather upholstery is, obviously, richer looking and likely more durable, but no more comfortable. The front seats of the latest model have slightly taller and marginally wider backs than their '06 counterparts, but are still short on thigh support. But to the limited extent the cr-v lends itself to sporty driving, the seatbacks' side bolsters do an adequate job of keeping occupants' upper bodies in place. Not so the seat bottom's bolsters, those being clearly shaped more for ease of entry and exit than for restraining occupants' posteriors. There is, however, a most welcome dead pedal against which drivers may brace a left leg as necessary and appropriate. The top-hinged liftgate is an improvement over right-hinged tailgates, which open the wrong way for curbside unloading at u. Airports.  dashboard and instrument cluster are classic honda, as in, friendly to eye and hand, with the only mildly discordant note the placement of the shift lever, sprouting from a pod suspended from the center of the dash. While neither as ergonomic as a floor-mounted lever nor as natural, in an archaic sort of way, as one mounted on the steering column, it is consistent with the emphasis on flexibility in the front seat area. In the lx and ex, the space between the front seats that might otherwise host a console and floor-mounted shift lever is dedicated to a unique, multi-use tray that when not needed folds down against the side of the passenger seat, opening a walk-through access to the rear seat. The ex-l gets a more traditional, fixed center console, with cup holders and storage space for up to 24 cd's; although some of this storage space is lost on ex-l's with navigation, where the console must house the cd changer as well. As if in compensation, a digital audio-card reader is still exclusive to the navigation model.  most drivers will find the six-way adjustable seat and two-way adjustable steering give them the best of all worlds: a comfortable posture without compromising outward visibility. A low cowl keeps the edges of the hood in view. Rearward vision, however, sets no new standard and actually suffers some from the awkwardly shaped c-pillars. The rearview video cam that comes with the optional nav system helps and is an added safety feature because it can help the driver spot children behind the vehicle, though it lacks the guiding grid lines some others offer to help when backing into parking spaces and garages.  audio and climate controls on the lx and ex border on retro in their simplicity and arrangement. Large, rotary knobs control the functions that vary by degrees. Buttons are used for on/off or simple selections. However, when in park, the shift lever obstructs buttons for air conditioning functions and mirror heaters. And by operational necessity, the optional nav system layers audio and map display controls.  comparing cargo space, the new cr-v ranks in the top half, regardless of the competitor's seating capacit. 2010 honda odyssey review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. New car test drive. introductionthe honda odyssey might be the best minivan on the market. It's one of the most enjoyable to drive and lives up to honda's reputation for refinement, convenience, and great fit and finish. Its flexible seating system can accommodate up to eight passengers and it has plenty of room. Even on base lx and one-step-up ex models it features honda's efficiency-enhancing variable valve timing with electronic lift control (vtec). Changes have been minimal since then. For 2009, honda added some more content at the ex-l level. It includes a 9-inch screen an a 115-volt ac power outlet. It has a slightly stiffer suspension for improved handling and rides on p235/60r17 tires. Large headlights flank its big, angular grille. The odyssey's hood is sculpted with curves that lead naturally back to the windshield and emphasize the big fender flares. Honda has not hidden the sliding door channels at the base of the window but left them partially obscured by a crease that runs the length of the vehicle.  all models come with two sliding doors, manually operated on the lx and electrically operated on all other models. The power windows in each of the side doors can be opened in the same fashion as in a car. We found the power doors seemed a bit reluctant to operate at times and were less responsive to key fob commands than were the sliding doors on the toyota sienna.  the odyssey boasts honda's advanced compatibility engineering (ace) body structure. The vehicle's crush zones have been engineered to provide good protection for occupants while minimizing damage in a collision with smaller vehicles and pedestrians. Its body structure is rigid, which contributes to crisp handling and a smooth ride. A low drag coefficient helps improve fuel economy and high-speed stability. interiorinside, the odyssey is both comfortable and convenient. It feels downright luxurious when ordered with leather trim. The soft materials look good and the metallic-colored trim that runs across the center of the dash is attractive.  up front, the driver's seat is designed to hold the driver firmly and is positioned in a car-like setting. The shift lever is mounted on the dashboard, and while it looks odd at first, it's easier to use than a column-mounted shifter. A handy drink tray is provided between the front seats, and it can be folded down to allow walkthrough access to the second row. There is no center console. Two glove boxes are provided, which are more awkward for storage than one big one.  the second-row bucket seats are roomy and comfortable.  the third-row seat splits 60/40 and folds easily into the well provided for it, and the headrests do not need to be removed before folding.  cubby storage includes a useful storage area hidden under the middle of the floor, accessible from both the front and middle-row seats. Originally it was designed to house the spare tire, but honda engineers moved the spare tire to a location in the rear. Instead of removing the round space under the floor where the spare used to reside, they've turned it into a hidden storage compartment with a rotating compartmentalized bin, like a lazy susan. A small panel in the floor between the two front seats lets front passengers access the bin while another panel is provided in front of the second-row seats. Front and middle-row passengers can turn the lazy susan and access whatever is stored inside.  eight people can fit in the odyssey with the available plusone seat that fits between the two captain's chairs in the second row. If it's not needed as a seat, it can be turned into a table or stowed in the floor in place of the lazy susan bin. If the plusone seat is not being used, the right-hand seat can be slid across to allow easier access to the third-row seats. This flexibility makes the odyssey a versatile people hauler.  for cargo, the third-row seats fold (a fairly easy task) and the second row can be removed (not so easy) to offer 147. 4 cubic feet of cargo space, more than most minivans and any suv.  the navigation system is one of the easiest to operate using its on-screen menus and includes zagat restaurant data. The large eight-inch monitor is positioned high on the dashboard for easy viewing. The system also responds to voice commands, and we found it responds effectively. It's capable of responding to more than 600 voice commands and is smart enough to understand different accents and find locations without any need for input other than by voice. Apart from navigation, the system can be used to operate the radio and climate controls.  the rearview camera makes parallel parking easier and also functions as a safety feature: by displaying what's behind the car on the navigation screen, it can show the driver unseen hazards such as a small child possibly preventing a tragic accident. We find rearview cameras very useful in crowded shopping center parking lots where people are walking behind the car after we've shifted into reverse.  the dvd entertainment system features a large nine-inch widescreen display that folds out of the ceiling for viewing by second-row passengers. The wireless headsets turn on and off automatically as the ear pads are rotated. driving impressionhonda's goal with odyssey was producing a minivan with the handling of a european sedan, and it hasn't missed.

2012 honda accord review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. The benchmark for midsize sedans. introductionthe honda accord is difficult to beat in terms of overall performance, efficiency and refinement. Honda accord and toyota camry have long been the benchmarks for midsize sedans because both do everything well. It comes with a sporty suspension package and low-profile tires on 18-inch wheels, and goes head to head with the nissan altima coupe.  with effectively five trim levels, the accord can fit a wide range of budgets. There's a no-frills sedan with plastic wheel covers, essential features and a solid stereo; and high-trim models with sumptuous leather, mega-watt sound systems, active noise cancellation and navigation. All variants deliver high engineering standards, excellent finish, good build quality and all the important safety equipment.  the 2012 accord carries over largely unchanged; a usb port comes standard on all 2012 accord models. The accord benefitted from a facelift for 2011, and some new features and efficiencies brought improved fuel mileage ratings. The accord sedan and coupe were last redesigned for 2008, when they grew in exterior dimensions and offered improved occupant safety.  some of the accord's competitors have been redesigned more recently. Others can be more fun to drive. Yet there may be none that match accord's overall combination of polish, refinement, efficiency and choice. For that reason, the honda accord remains a benchmark among mainstream, midsize automobiles. lineupthe 2012 honda accord line-up includes sedans and coupes, with three engine choices, 5- and 6-speed manual transmissions, and a 5-speed automatic. Rather than offering traditional options or option packages, honda tends to mark upgrades in equipment with a different model designation. It comes with cloth upholstery; air conditioning; power mirrors, windows and door locks; a tilt-telescoping steering column; folding rear seats; and a 160-watt sound system with single cd, an auxiliary jack and, new for 2012, a usb port. The standard wheels are 16-inch steel with plastic covers, but the tailpipe sports a chrome finisher. The 5-speed manual transmission is standard, and the 5-speed automatic 800) is available. It also adds a 6cd changer, 17-inch alloy wheels, power moonroof, heated mirrors and premium interior accents. The automatic is available.  accord ex v6 sedan 27,280) features a 271-hp, 3. 5-liter v6 with 5-speed automatic; fog lights come standard.  accord ex-l 27,555) and accord ex-l v6 sedan 29,630) add leather on the seats and steering wheel, while the ex-l v6 also has two-position memory for the driver's seat. The ex-l models also come with 270-watt audio, xm satellite radio, bluetooth connectivity, heated front seats, compass and exterior temperature indicator, automatic on/off headlights and an auto-dimming rearview mirror. Accord coupe ex-l v6 with navi 31,930) adds navigation and rearview camera.  safety features on all accords include six airbags, with two-stage front airbags, front passenger side-impact airbags and head-protection curtains for all outboard seats. Other standard safety features include active front head restraints, electronic stability control, antilock brakes with electronic brake distribution and brake assist, and a tire pressure monitor. The optional navigation system includes a rearview camera, which can help the driver spot children and other hazards behind the car when backing up. walkaroundall honda accord models got a mild styling makeover for 2011, and there are no significant changes for 2012. Known in the car business as a mid-cycle facelift, the 2011 changes are about as extensive as any car gets between complete redesigns. They re-emphasize the accord's conservative, upscale appearance.  the current-generation accord sedan was introduced as a 2008 model, and it's larger than any before it. Although it competes in the mid-size market segment, the sedan is classified a large car by the federal government, based on interior volume. The coupe looks lighter, more lithe.  the 2011 styling updates for the sedan and coupe won't be obvious from across a parking lot, but they're noticeable in details at closer range. The sedan's front bumper and grille, wedged between angular, jewel-like light clusters were re-shaped. The effect is a slightly more pronounced snout than before. In back, the lip of the trunk lid and the taillights have been tweaked for a crisper, even more substantial look.  in general, the accords maintain their contemporary yet notably conservative design, highlighted by a strong character line that slopes down and forward like that of the acura tl, though the hondas are much less angular than the acuras. All accord variants maintain the honda hallmarks of narrow windshield pillars and a low cowl that promote good forward visibility. The swept-back headlight housings minimize protruding corners and ease maneuverability, though it takes some familiarity before the driver is certain exactly where the corners of the car are. Many of the accord's design elements are a product of auto/pedestrian collision standards. Stepping up to the accord se model adds leather upholstery and heated seats, but the basics like seat design and driver ergonomics are shared by all models.  the leather is high quality and perfectly tailored, and the driver's seat in most models has multiple power adjustments. There's good support for the long haul, but the seats are easy to slide in and out of during around-town errands. Ex-l v6 models add a two-position memory for the driver's seat. The shifter is right at hand, and the proper handbrake has short travel. The sunroof button, reading lights and a drop-down glasses holder are located in a mini-console above the rearview mirror.  there's a clear view of what's all around outside the accord, and of the proven, extra-crisp dial-and-needle gauges inside. Accords equipped with the navigation system now come with a back-up camera, and it's valuable. 2004 honda cr-v review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Space, convenience and agility make an appealing compact suv. introductionthe honda cr-v is roomy, convenient and easy to drive. It rides smoothly, without the jouncy harshness of many suvs. The cr-v is surprisingly maneuverable in tight quarters and handles well on winding roads. It's also stable in stiff crosswinds at freeway speeds.  in short, the cr-v has grown up. This recently redesigned suv is bigger, roomier and more powerful than the first-generation cr-v, and it has reclaimed its spot among the best small sport-utilities offered by any manufacturer.  like toyota's rav4, the cr-v was one of the first so-called cute-utes: not quite a sport-utility, but more than a car, offering an upright seating position, all-wheel drive and decent cargo space. Since it was built on a car platform (the honda civic), cr-v's highway-friendly ride and handling made it drive more like a car. A thorough re-do for 2002 put the cr-v squarely back in the game. It still isn't much good off-road, but it's better than competent on the highways and byways where most suvs are driven most of the time. This honda beats most of its immediate competitors in both qualitative and quantitative measures, and trails the competition in only a few. Honda has long believed that the fewer the options, the less a car costs to build, so options on its small suv are few.  the base lx 19,000) is the only cr-v with just front-wheel drive. It comes well equipped. An automatic transmission is also standard with this front-drive model.  lx 4wd comes standard with a five-speed manual transmission 19,400), but is also available with an automatic 20,200). Side-impact air bags 250) are optional. Aluminum wheels are available as a dealer-installed accessory. Ex 4wd comes with a choice of five-speed manual 21,750) or automatic 22,550).  compared to 2003 models, these prices (msrp) reflect a modest increase of $100 for the lx and $150 for the ex. walkaroundthe cr-v has grown up, and there's no better evidence than its styling. The emphasis now is less on cute, more on ute. The body panels are smoother and not quite so busy, suggesting a more robust persona than the original cr-v. The shorter, blunter front-end creates a more rugged off-road look.  the cr-v still sports its trademark high-mount tail lights on either side of the rear window. The rear glass opens on its own, separately from the tailgate, which is good. Unfortunately, the lower part of the gate is side-hinged and opens to the right. Think of it as a cute puppy that's filled out as it's grown up. interiorthe honda cr-v has a friendly interior that's easy to live with, and quite convenient in the daily hustle. Getting in and out is quick and easy and doesn't require climbing or stooping. Gauges are easy to read, with white numerals on a black background, eliminating the twilight wash-out afflicting the black-on-white arrays that are the current fad. Cruise control is standard, as is an adjustable steering column.  improvements the last two years have been focused on the interior. For 2004, there's the power-lock switch added to the front-passenger door on all trim levels. Just a few years ago, these convenient changers were the preserve of true luxury cars. The parking brake is disguised, subtly integrated into the vertical panel forward of the center console. As odd as the placement might seem at first, using the hand brake gets more comfortable in short order.  it's the small, thoughtful touches that make the cr-v a pleasant place to go about the business of driving. There's a cool, collapsible tray table betwixt the front seats, with a couple of cup holders and a recess for a cell phone or odds-and-ends. The cover for the spare-tire bin does double duty as a folding picnic table. Almost everything else seems to be where it should be, and there are no less than 21 storage nooks adroitly spread through the cabin.  the front seats are excellent. In most measures of interior room, the cr-v beats its competition. Only the toyota rav4 tops the cr-v's front seat headroom, and by less than half an inch. The ford escape and rav4 provide more front-seat leg room, by 0. 3 and 0. 9 inches, respectively, over the cr-v's still-generous 41. 3 inches. Taller drivers or those who like to sit upright might notice.  more surprising than the front-passenger accommodations is the space and comfort provided by the cr-v's rear seats. The rear bench is neither too soft nor too hard, and allows passengers to travel for more than a few minutes without getting numb-reared or fidgety. All three rear positions have three-point belts and head restraints, something not all suvs offer.  in terms of cargo hauling, the cr-v is the champion among the small suvs, with 72. 0 cubic feet of cargo space. Better still, the cr-v's 60/40 split rear seat slides forward and back over a range of six inches to maximize either passenger or cargo space when the seat is up. driving impressionmost small suvs offer an optional v6 engine. Honda is a leader in engine technology, and the cr-v's 2. 4-liter, 16-valve, dohc engine benefits from 'intelligent' i-vtec. Through this miracle of variable valve timing, honda is able to generate lots of usable power while keeping fuel economy at an impressive epa-estimated 22/26 mpg city/highway. Like all hondas, the cr-vs are clean-running vehicles. Downshifts come quickly, and full-throttle upshifts come smoothly just before the redline. It's a great aid when winter snowstorms hit, adding confidence and sure-footed tracking in slippery conditions. In the snow or on dirt and gravel roads, honda's real time awd enhances stability and maximizes traction. This is not a true off-road system with a dual-range transfer case or locking differentials or anything of the sort. With its standard smooth-tread tires, the cr-v is not suited for backcountry off-road travel.  whether the roads are smooth or rough, the cr-v rides well. It rides more smoothly than most suvs, which makes for pleasant motoring around town over busy, beat-up streets. Handling is reassuring. It feels sure-footed on twist.
